FUE vs DHI Hair Transplant: Which Technique Is Right for You?

Techniques · Updated August 2026 · 5 min read

Almost every patient researching a hair transplant in Turkey ends up asking the same question: FUE or DHI? Both are modern, minimally invasive techniques with excellent results in experienced hands, but they differ in how grafts are implanted, and that difference matters for specific situations.

How FUE works

Follicular Unit Extraction is the technique that made Istanbul the hair transplant capital of the world. Follicular units are extracted one by one from the donor area at the back of the head using micro-punches. The surgeon then opens tiny channels in the recipient area, and the grafts are placed into those channels. There is no linear scar, healing is fast, and FUE handles large coverage areas efficiently, which makes it the default choice for advanced hair loss.

How DHI works

Direct Hair Implantation uses the same extraction method, but skips the separate channel-opening step. Each graft is loaded into a Choi implanter pen and injected directly into the scalp. The surgeon controls angle, direction and depth in a single motion, which allows very precise, dense placement, particularly valuable along the hairline, on the crown, and when adding density between existing hairs without shaving the whole head.

The honest comparison

FUEDHI
Best forLarge areas, advanced lossHairline design, density, unshaven work
Session sizeLarger graft counts per sessionSomewhat smaller per session
ShavingUsually full shavePartial or no shave possible
HealingFastFast, often slightly less crusting
PriceStandardTypically a bit higher

Sapphire FUE: the middle ground

Many Istanbul clinics now perform Sapphire FUE, where recipient channels are opened with sapphire-crystal blades instead of steel. The smoother blade creates smaller micro-channels, which means less tissue trauma, reduced crusting and the ability to pack grafts closer together. It keeps FUE's large-session capacity while narrowing the density gap with DHI.

The real answer: you should not have to choose alone. A good medical team looks at your hair loss pattern, your donor capacity and your goals, then recommends the technique, or a combination, that fits your case. Be cautious with any clinic that sells one technique to every patient.

Which one should you pick?

Whichever direction you lean, insist on a photo consultation and a written plan that names the technique, the estimated graft range and the fixed price before you book anything.
